Before you choose to Carry a Concealed Weapon (CCW) please take the time to learn about a Permit to Carry and Concealed Carry laws. It is highly recommended that BEFORE you choose to carry a concealed weapon you fully understand your rights as well as the risks. While we cannot recommend businesses that offer training, our office can provide you with list of organizations that provide weapons safety and training classes.

Concealed Weapons Permits

Concealed Weapons Permits (Standard or Enhanced)

First Time Application for Standard or Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit

The following are the criteria for applying for a Standard or Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit with the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office:

To apply for a permit the applicant will need:

1. Application (Click Here) – Or applicant may obtain the application and instructions from the front desk at the Sheriff’s Office.

2. Valid state photo ID

3. Standard Permit proof of training:

a. NRA firearms training, military training, law enforcement training or hunter safety course.

The fee for the background check and license is $56.05 (cash, check, credit card) and will be collected at the time you turn in your application. (Fees are non-refundable)

4. Enhanced Permit proof of training:

a. A signed copy of the State of Idaho Concealed Weapons Training Form that has been completed and signed by a valid firearms instructor, the legal instructor and applicant. Training certificate is only valid for one (1) year.
b. If you are an Idaho resident you need six (6) consecutive months of residency prior to applying. Residency starts by issue date on your Idaho photo ID.
c. If you are not an Idaho resident and live in another state, you will need to provide a valid state photo ID and weapons permit from your resident state.

 5. Applicant fingerprinting. NOTE: Fingerprints must be completed by Bonner County Sheriff’s Jail. Fingerprints will not be taken until the Sheriff’s Office has received all of the applicant’s documents, background and license fees.

a. Fingerprinting is available in the jail on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
b. There is a $15.00 fee. You will need cash in the exact amount, as we are not able to provide change.
c. Valid state photo ID

A letter will be mailed to the applicant, either letting them know if the applicant was approved or denied. If the applicant is approved, the applicant will go to the Bonner County Driver’s License Office (Priest River or Sandpoint) for issuance. The permit is valid for five (5) years.

Renewals for Standard or Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit

  • The Idaho Standard or Enhanced weapon permit expires in five (5) years. You may renew up to three months prior to your expiration date. NOTE: If your Idaho weapons permit is expired over 90 days, you will pay a $10.00 late fee at the time you apply for your license.  If your permit is expired over 180 days, the applicant will start the entire process over.   • The applicant will need to fill out the application again and turn it into the front desk with $37.80 (Cash, check or credit card. Fees are non-refundable).
  • A letter will be mailed to the applicant, either letting them know the applicant was approved or denied. If the applicant is approved, the applicant will go to the Bonner County Driver’s License Office (Priest River or Sandpoint) for issuance. The permit is valid for five (5) years.

CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMITS (Retired Law Enforcement)

The following are the criteria for applying for a Retired Law Enforcement Concealed Weapons Permit with the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office:

  • Must meet the Federal Code, USC sec. 921-922.
  • A “qualified retired law enforcement officer,” as defined in Public Law 111-272, includes individuals who have separated in good standing with a government agency as a law enforcement officer for a combined fifteen (15) years.
  • Must have a current and valid photographic identification issued by the agency from which the individual has retired from service as a law enforcement officer.
  • Must provide proof that during the most recent twelve (12) month period, the standards for qualification in firearms training for active law enforcement officers by a certified firearms instructor, has been met.

First Time Application for Retired Law Enforcement

The applicant must fill out the Concealed Weapons License Application for retired Law Enforcement Officer, which must be notarized when signed and a payment of $20.00 (cash, check or credit card. Fees are non-refundable) for processing is required. The application can be found by clicking here: CWP Retired Application.

A letter will be mailed to the applicant, either letting them know if the application was approved or denied. If the application is approved, the applicant will need to go to the Bonner County Driver’s License Office (Priest River or Sandpoint) for issuance. The permit is valid for one (1) year.

Renewals for Retired Law Enforcement

The applicant must fill out the Concealed Weapons License Application for Retired Law Enforcement Officer, which must be notarized when signed.

  • Must have a current and valid photographic identification issued by the agency from which the individual has retired from service as a law enforcement officer.
